Sammies Award Show And Block Party

This weekend is the annual Sacramento Music Awards show and party. While some of us miss the days that it was held in the Crest Theater, there is also something to be said for a block party. Right? So go out and see some live music and see who wins the awards for the best Sacramento artists. You might find some comedy, a beer garden, and more there too. Lots of Sacramento’s musical talent will be there.

Saturday October 1 5-10 PM, 20th St between J and K

Operation ID At Luna’s

Operation ID is a bionic synth-pop band from a young Seattle record label called Table & Chairs. (www.tableandchairsmusic.com) Come out and see them at Luna’s, a nice place to see a show.

Show Details:

Sept 19th

Operation ID, Steve Adams, & Ross Hammond Duo.

Luna Cafe & Juice Bar - 1414 16th Street

More about Operation ID, from their bio:

Operation ID has been variedly called anything from “jazz” to “progressive rock” to “man rock” to “thought-rock” to the self-christened “bionic synth-pop.” What began as duets between members Ivan Arteaga (saxophone/clarinet) and Jared Borkowski (guitar) in a University of Washington basement quickly expanded to include Evan Woodle on drums and David Balatero on bass, playing improvisation-heavy, free jazz-influenced compositions. Rob Hanlon soon joined on keyboards. With their current lineup complete, Operation ID oriented themselves toward a more through-composed musical landscape, transitioning from a purely instrumental outfit into one that more and more incorporates solo and group vocals by all five members of the band. Their first album, Legs, released on Table & Chairs, reflects the changes that have occurred throughout the entirety of Operation ID’s first two years of existence. The album more than hints at the band’s current direction. As Operation ID continues to compose and rehearse new music to play in their frequent Seattle-area shows, their fanbase and music horizons both continue to grow.

Lips At Shine Cafe

Singer-songwriter Lips (aka Stephanie Brown) will be playing on August 26th at Shine Cafe, 1400 E Street in Sacramento. Go check out this interesting act. You can hear more on her Facebook page or her web site.

From her press release:

A talented keyboard player with a soft spot for Casio sounds, Stephanie Brown a.k.a Lips performed extensively in her native New Zealand before moving to New York and forming the soul blues act Fredericks Brown in 2007. In 2010 Brown decided to take the leap and make music in her own right.

Characterised by a giant pair of lips on legs, Lips is that solo persona. Having already won comparisons to the likes of Oh Land and Little Dragon, her’s is a unique sound characterised by masterful songwriting and a sly sense of humor. Whether it’s loneliness or love, anger of happiness, Brown has a knack for capturing the bittersweet nuances of life and putting them to song.

Having released an EP via Bandcamp in 2010, Brown has just released the track “Everything to me”, which she describes as “an everyday account of needing to take a break from your everyday… and the deeper sentiment of supporting your loved ones through the hurdles that life throws at them”.

As Lips, Brown’s ability to both transfix and entertain make her a must see live act.
