Former Sacramento resident Shannon Curtis will be performing in Sacramento on Saturday, July 16th at The Naked Lounge.

While you are waiting for that, check out her song ”Brightest Light in the Room.” It’s described as alternative-electro-downtempo-dream-pop. Also, the story behind the music touches on important human rights issues currently being discussed in the US: the end of the military’s “Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell” policy, and the rights of gay and lesbian Americans to marry.

Listen to “Brightest Light In The Room”

From the press release:

“I received an email last summer from a fan in Saint Louis asking if I’d consider writing a song for her marriage proposal to her girlfriend,” says Curtis. “My immediate response was, ‘Absolutely!’” Several more emails helped Curtis fill in the details of the couple’s story — including that one of the women is currently battling cancer.

“The thing by which I was most struck was that even though these women have faced some seriously difficult stuff — war, cancer, a law requiring them to hide their relationship while serving their country, and living in a state that does not recognize marriages like theirs – they have so much joy for life and love for each other,” says Curtis. The couple were engaged in October of 2010, to the tune of the song written for them.

Curtis says she is blessed to have been a part of their story, and she hopes that “Brightest Light in the Room” will remind listeners that in dark times, there is love to light the way. “Love is universal. This song was written for these two women, but it could be about anybody. I think if more people were able to see their own stories in stories like this one, the debate over gay rights in this country would end.”

Remember, July 16th.

Their music has been described as “nodding at times to the sea shanties of Neutral Milk Hotel and at others to the boat-shoe-gazing of Vampire Weekend” (The National Post). Their songs range from backwoods folk on “False Creek Change” to danceable ukulele/glockenspiel rave ups on “Goodnight Moon” and create a diverse mix for any indie/pop lover.

Oakland Americana band, The Shants, are be taking their Southern folk and country sounds up and down the West Coast in August, kicking off their tour in Sacramento. See them at The Naked Lounge, 1111 H Street in Sacramento, on August 19. The show starts at 8:00 PM and cost is $5.00. Joining the kickoff party will be locals Not an Airplane, and The Foxtails which is the debut of a new band from Erik Hanson (The Stragglers, Forever Goldrush) and Brianna Lea Pruett.

From their press:

Though only a year old, The Shants have garnered praise from FILTER, No Depression, San Francisco Chronicle, and music blogs like Beat Surrender and A Truer Sound. The Shants’ slow-burning sound originates from the rural backgrounds of its members: from South Louisiana delta pines, to the brusk plains of Minnesota, to the rolling hills of the Central California Coast. The Shants now call Oakland, California home. They have shared the stage with Basia Bulat, Adam Acuragi, Damien Jurado, Christina Antipa, Grand Lake, and many others. NOTE: After moving from his hometown of Baton Rouge, Louisiana… singer Skip Allums spent a few years in Sacramento before settling in the Bay Area.

Today’s Sacramento Bee had a nice article on all-ages music venues here in Sactown. Hey, music doesn’t care how old you are! You can read their article here.

It begins:

Much has been made of midtown and downtown Sacramento’s resurgent night life scene, with its wine bars and swank cocktail lounges. But a different renaissance is occurring as well – one less shiny, more grass-roots and definitely aimed at a younger crowd.

Sacramento’s all-ages music scene, once mostly spread out to suburban venues such as the Boardwalk and Club Retro, both in Orangevale, has centralized over the past few years and especially the past several months, with several intriguing all-ages (as opposed to 21-plus or 18-plus) venues opening either in or within a guitar pick’s throw of midtown.

And it goes on from there, check it out. Then let us know, did they get it right? Did they leave out the best place? If you have an opinion or an addition, feel free to leave us a comment.
