Antonette Goroch (AntonetteG) and Michele Kappel-Stone (Tippy Canoe) are both artists in their own right, but collaborate and tour as a duo they’ve dubbed, The Cupcake Diaries. Sister-like harmonies and a merry-go-round of guitar, ukulele, washboard and bass propel their roots-pop sound. Kappel-Stone plays the ukulele, guitar and washboard, while Goroch sticks mostly to guitar and this year they’ve toured several cities all over the country. Now they are heading to home turf with a Northern California tour.

This time around they will be hosting a friend from Washington, DC, Olivia Mancini and have offered to back her as a rhythm section, each playing the instruments they started out on. Kappel-Stone was a former drummer for the rock band, The Kirby Grips (Sympathy For The Record Industry) and Goroch was a bass player for Liesl’s Wet Dress (Rodent Records) and Amazon Mollies.

And you never know what you’re going to get from Olivia Mancini…You might have to bring your earplugs. Or you might be able hear a pin drop while Olivia and the gang perform their songs on acoustic guitars and kazoos. Either way, it’s the band that’s having the most fun.

Friday, July 16th, 8PM, at the 16th Street Cafe (formerly The Java Lounge): 2416 16th Street. Local artist Adrian Bourgeois is on the bill too.

Today’s Sacramento Bee had a nice article on all-ages music venues here in Sactown. Hey, music doesn’t care how old you are! You can read their article here.

It begins:

Much has been made of midtown and downtown Sacramento’s resurgent night life scene, with its wine bars and swank cocktail lounges. But a different renaissance is occurring as well – one less shiny, more grass-roots and definitely aimed at a younger crowd.

Sacramento’s all-ages music scene, once mostly spread out to suburban venues such as the Boardwalk and Club Retro, both in Orangevale, has centralized over the past few years and especially the past several months, with several intriguing all-ages (as opposed to 21-plus or 18-plus) venues opening either in or within a guitar pick’s throw of midtown.

And it goes on from there, check it out. Then let us know, did they get it right? Did they leave out the best place? If you have an opinion or an addition, feel free to leave us a comment.
