Sammies Happen

The annual Sacramento Music Awards (The Sammies) were held on July 17th at the Crest Theater. You can view the results on the Sacramento News & Review site. Our friend and fellow music lover Mike D attended, here is his take on the evening:

The Sammies were different this year.  A different MC.  There were only about 6 or 7 groups that played.  But each group played about 5 songs.  I would rather have seen more groups playing 2 or three songs.  My favorite was Butterscotch, fronted by a black chick who did a bunch of base noises and brass noises just with her mouth, while playing another instrument and singing.  She could do the whole thing without any help, but on several of her songs she had a couple others filling in the cracks.  She did different things, some jazzy, some hip hoppity.

Also saw The Losin’ Streaks (metal – a couple big guitars), The Evening Episode, An Angle (basic rock and roll – I liked them), Live Mannikins (four hip hop dudes – they were also good), Ricky Berger (kind of cute, softer, talented, somewhat quirky), The New Humans (I don’t remember much about them).  Some very attractive women called the Body something or other giving out the awards.

So did you go? And if so what did you think?

Phil Wilson – Monday at Old Ironsides

Phil Wilson (of The June Brides) will stop by Sacramento this Monday night, July 21st at Old Ironsides on his way between shows in Portland and San Francisco. The show starts at 8:00 PM. Also on the bill, the English Singles and Baby Grand.

Phil Wilson & The June Brides were a great English indie pop band from the mid 80’s. They were championed by John Peel, and Morrissey (who rated them his favorite group of 1985), as well journalists Everett True, and Dave Eggers.  In fact, they’re still name dropped by likes of Belle & Sebastian, Primal Scream as well as the Manic Street Preachers, and Television Personalities, both of which have contributed songs to a June Brides tribute album in 2006.

The Cured – A Tribute To The Cure

The Cured is a Southern California based realistic rendition of the 80′s super band The Cure. The band performs a true to era 1989 Cure concert complete with costumes, lights, effects and of course the songs. They will be at Marilyn’s on K Street on Saturday July 12. You don’t need to wear black. You just need to like The Cure. And that part is easy. The show is at 9:00 PM. Read more about The Cured on their web site.

“I had heard these guys were good, but I was unprepared for how good they actually are. I was struck speechless from the moment when they came on stage to the end of their show. It was like being taken back in a time machine.” – Richard Blade (Iconic Los Angeles 80′s music DJ. For VH1, KROQ, STAR FM and Sirius)
“I saw The Cure last year and I have to say that I enjoyed The Cured much more. They ARE The Cure in their 80′s heyday. They play all the memorable hits that Robert Smith and the current version of The Cure won’t do any more.” – Robin Roth (popular San Diego DJ )
”Close your eyes and you might think you were listening to a Cure show, take a peek and you might think you were at a Cure show. Hauntingly close”- Steve West (famous 80′s radio personality -91x FM San Diego)
