Sammies 16 – A Musical Feast

Twelve or so bands played on the main stage and another eight or nine on the second stage. Sure, they only played a couple songs each but still, what a great deal! Where else can you see that much good music for a price so cheap? And of course there are the awards too. With all the talent in our big city, it’s a pleasure to watch the artists be recognized.

New Rock From Caligator

Trust is the third CD from this Roseville, CA. band. More good rock’in tunes with killer guitar. Check it out at CD Baby. Guitarist and vocalist Corky says “This CD is more of our ‘live feel’ and has that ‘go for it’ kinda vibe. Much more heavy then the last two CD’s but still swings with that jazzy southern sound.”

Antmusic

Big props to quirky/catchy local singer-songwriter Anton Barbeau. The local newspaper selected “In the Village of the Apple Sun” as their Sunday Single for the week. Way to go, Ant! It’s a song from his psychedelic pop album with the very same title. Check it out! Or if you want a little less psychedelic (for him, anyway) effort, pick up his classic 1999 album A Splendid Tray or the Sammie award-winner The Horses Tongue. Or go see him live, he is always entertaining.

And he has a wild sense of humor. A year or two ago, we saw him at Luna’s on our Anniversary. A friend told him it was our big day so he changed some lyrics in his infamous Banana Song to “anniversary song”. What a guy.

Covers At Crawdad’s

Like classic rock? Well, maybe sometimes? We saw Stonekold over the weekend at Crawdad’s Cantina. The band was talented, the songs, well, it depends on what you like. I wouldn’t care if I never heard Lynyrd Skynyrd again. But other cover songs (Stones, Creedence, etc) fared much better and all the musicians played and sang well. Overall, it was a fun evening! Except…

The venue, Crawdad’s, is another story. Frankly, it was awful and I hope to stay far away from there when it comes to music. They took away all the chairs Read More…

The Record Store

Did you know that Records has moved? Yes, I mean the huge record store that used to be on the K Street Mall. Now it’s at 1618 Broadway. The old store was known for a huge amount of vinyl (and for being used on the cover of DJ Shadow’s album). Check out the new location. Support our local record stores or else the terrorists will win!
